Class of 2020

Dear members of the Class of 2020,

I write you to provide an important update about our plans for commemorating your graduation.

Last year, we made the difficult but necessary decision to postpone on-campus commencement events until May 2021 in order to safeguard the health of our community. We were grateful for your grace and understanding in the face of such disappointing news. As you know, the pandemic has only worsened since last spring, making it very challenging to plan for travel and hosting a large gathering safely. We have therefore determined that we cannot host a celebration for your class on campus this May.

I regret having to deliver this news, and I know that last spring's virtual commencement was no replacement for an in-person ceremony honoring your achievements and commemorating your graduation. You will be hearing more from Dean Perdue about plans to come together with your former classmates and professors for an in-person celebration once circumstances allow.

As I said to you last spring, the pandemic has stretched our web wider than perhaps ever before, but it will not break; it will expand. I thank you for your continued understanding during this difficult time and look forward to welcoming you back to Richmond just as soon as it is safe again to do so.

Until then, please take good care.
